Waste Management and Design for Recycling

These Studies have been prepared for Envirowise by recognised industry experts in plastics processing, and are designed to offer practical advice on the best and most cost-effective approaches. The publications fit together with materials from the sister Energy Efficiency Best Practice Programme to give a complete cost cutting guide to plastics processing.

ET219: Waste Mapping

Typically in UK businesses, the true cost of waste is usually over 4% of turnover. Proven waste minimisation initiatives have shown that this figure can often be easily reduced by 25%. The cost savings go straight to the bottom line. To reduce waste it is necessary to understand where and how it occurs, and how much it really is costing. Being committed to waste minimisation is an attractive idea, but many companies do not know where to start, or how to ensure continuing success. This publication with its inclusive blank map provides clear guidance how to get started!

CS 274: Process changes at plastics company saves cost and waste:

This Case Study describes the benefits to a plastics company of implementing a long-term waste minimisation plan. A number of cost-saving changes to process control were introduced without compromising quality. Steps were also taken to involve customers and staff before any changes were made to improve the company's operations. The successes include improvements to process control which have resulted in a 6% reduction in raw material purchase of polymer and a saving of £400 000/year in material costs. March 2001
