For more than 2 decades the Flame Retardants conferences have provided an unprecedented forum for the introduction of new technological achievements and an exceptional opportunity for delegates to network with colleagues and clients from across the globe. The 12th Flame Retardants conference continues this tradition.

The Flame Retardants 2006 conference deals with current issues regarding fire properties of materials and finished products but especially emphasizes issues where flame retardants are involved.

Flame retardants have long been shown to bring lifesaving benefits to consumers by lowering product ignitability, fire development rates and smoke production. More recently, some flame retardants are now being reviewed as to whether they pose risks to the environment or to human health. Though scientific data may be incomplete or difficult to interpret, regulators, product manufacturers, and the FR industry must find an ethically correct route to develop and use safe consumer products - especially as Green NGOs focus on the non-FR properties of flame retardants.

Papers will address ecological matters, new product developments, novel applications; changes in assessment or methods or regulations that will affect those working in the flame retardants, the plastics industries or industries manufacturing products incorporating these materials. Presenters include pioneering workers in the area of fire research. These include Vytenis Babrauskas - inventor of the cone calorimeter and recent author of the authoritative textbook - Ignition Handbook, Mark Janssens, Director of SwRI, Koichi Yoshida the marine fire safety expert from NMRI, Japan and Richard Lyon of the US Federal Aviation Administration.

Sessions are dedicated to construction products and international developments. A special discussion forum is dedicated to developments in the electric cable making industry which will include debate of the current issues relating to combustion product irritancy and toxicity.
