Fire Safety

Through the general evolution of plastics technology and the development of Flame Retardantadditives, plastics materials are increasingly attractive for use in environments requiring high levels of fire performance.

It is the BPF's policy to promote within its membership high standards of fire safety through effective materials selection  and the exchange of best practice. The BPF Fire Safety Committee also aims to secure an objective appreciation of the role of plastics in fire situations.

The BPF Fire Committee also has a role presenting the plastics industry viewpoint to regulators and specifiers, both in the UK and EU on all aspects of fire safety and plastics.  It provides an essential forum, not only for BPF Members, but also associated BRUFMA members and key stakeholders such as representatives from the Government and major fire research and testing laboratories to focus on plastics contribution to Fire Prevention and Fire Safety.

High priority has been contributing to and interpreting the EU Construction Products Directive and the evolution of test methods and classifications of resistance and reaction to fire.

Other activities include:

  • lobbying and participation in the development of testing regimes for classification for resistance and reaction to fire under the terms of the EU Construction Products Directive
  • keeping abreast of and consulting on amendments to the UK Building Regulations with relation to fire safety
  • expressing concern over the testing and euroclassification of products such as roofs, cables and pipes
  • environmental aspects and impacts of burning plastics and rubber
  • representation on IEC, BSI, CEN and ISO standards committees
  • participation in the international conference, Flame Retardants
  • opposition to discriminatory legislation such as the proposed ban on halogented flame retardants in the EU proposed Directive on Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment

The BPF co-organises the Flame Retardants conference which deals with current issues regarding fire properties of materials and finished products but especially emphasizes issues where flame retardants are involved.
