Plastics, the Material of Innovation and Choice

Plastics can be moulded or blown into any shape, with any colour and either soft or hard to the touch.  Plastics Materials are:

Versatile | Lightweight | Cost Effective| Energy saving | Tough and durable | Recyclable

These advantages of plastics have been major factors in their tremendous advance during the second half of the twentieth century.  If we think of the iconic products of our generation many are made of plastic: the Bic biro; the Jif lemon and the Dyson vacuum cleaner, not forgetting the lego brick which was ‘Toy of the Century’ last century.

Visual and tactile, plastics make designers dreams come true.

Plastics have an incredibly good environmental profile.  Only 4% of the world’s oil production is used for plastics and much less energy is used to produce it compared to other materials.  Plastics are durable yet lightweight so plastic components have saved weight in both cars, aircraft, packaging and pipework.

When plastics have completed their use, whether as a car bumper or a bottle, they can either be recycled or if this is not economic or environmental the calorific value of the plastic (higher than coal) can be recovered through energy from waste incineration to provide much needed home-grown power.
