Group Management Committee

The British Plastics Federation Windows Group has been in existence since 1981 and over the intervening years it has played a major role in establishing the credibility of plastic as a material from which to manufacture windows. The Group helps to set industry standards, engages in dialogue with regulators and non-governmental organisations as well as creating an industry platform to communicate with customer bodies. The Windows Group is now the voice of the UK plastics windows, doors and conservatories industries.

The Group Management and Implementation Committee (GMIC) is where all the decisions regarding the direction, strategy, financing and implemetation of the Windows Group are made. In January 2006, Martin Althorpe (Technical Director, Spectus) was elected as Chairman of the GMIC.

The committee is involved in a major promotional campaign that is aimed at raising the awareness of the benefits of PVC products. This is absolutely essential, to combat the continuing steam of misinformation that still persists in the market place, despite all factual, independent, information that is now available. The campaign is being funded by the BPF Vinyls Group and the Windows Group, but it is hoped that once it is up and running it will be sustained by industry contributions.

As ever, we are in the midst of changes, revisions and introductions of standards and regulations. From ‘simple’ updates of standards to the introduction of the Code for Sustainable Homes, the Window Group is here to provide a forum for discussion and guidance.

The windows group management and implementation committee is engaged in tackling the issues of the industry and turn them into challenges, which can be met.  Developing an industry consensus on waste management, refuting the campaigns of mis-information about PVC and focusing on the positive benefits of the material represent the primary aims of the team.

The impact of someone else’s good ideas on our industry can be far-reaching and not always beneficial. I would urge anyone who cares about the long-term future of the PVC-U window industry to come along and contribute towards making sure there is one.

ImageAn early re-branding of the Windows Group with a new logo and strapline together with a new web-site are examples of the early initiatives to communicate the important messages to the industry and ultimately attract new members to the BPF Windows Group.
The web-site effectively establishes the BPF Windows Group as a 'consumer and industry friendly' source of information about PVC materials for their use in windows, doors & conservatories, so that myths can be rapidly dispelled before they take root.

The Group can readily draw on the resources of the British Plastics Federation, as a whole, in terms of expertise, technical advice and informed opinion on such relevant matters as Building Regulations,  European Legislation and Vinyl2010 (soon to become Vinyl Plus).

Our challenge is to promote the activities of the Windows Group and to demonstrate to those members (existing and potential) that we can not only provide a 'blue chip' database for customers, but also build confidence within the industry for high quality and reliable service in this important market place.

With the dynamics of the construction industry changing, the BPF Windows Group will continue to develop the necessary tools to promote the specification and use of PVC windows across the range of market sectors, from domestic to commercial.

The "A+" advert which has appeared in several Windows Journals is the effort of Windows group to promote PVC-U windows. Members are heavily involved in designing the adverts. The adverts are to be continued in publications such as the Glass Times, The Glazine etc. The Windows Group members are promoted throught these adverts.

There is a rolling series of fact based adverts:

  • PVC-U Windows & WER
  • PVC-U Windows & Colour
  • PVC-U Windows & Recycling

The Group will continue to embrace the changing needs and requirements of the market-place, whether this is through websites such as www.pvcaware.org or by other means.
