About Safety in Manufacturing Plastics 'SIMPL'
Launched, October 14th 2010, SIMPL (Safety In Manufacturing PLastics) is an initiative developed to reduce the incidence of accidents and ill-health in the UK Plastics Industry. SIMPL has been developed by the British Plastics Federation in partnership with fellow industry trade associations, employers organisations, trade unions, HSE and training organisations including...

The SIMPL initiative will run over three years from 2011 to 2014, bringing together all parts of the industry in a bid to stimulate progress on on accident and ill-health reduction across the board.
Strategic Objectives
-
Leaderships Objective
Employer associations and their participating members will demonstrate visible felt leadership. This will include specific actions at board level, including driving safety culture and personal activity (eg through leading audits, chairing health and safety committees, setting health and safety objectives for managers and their organisations, etc).
-
Management System Objective
Participating companies will establish a health and safety management system commensurate with the size and complexity of the company, with appropriate arrangements for policy, planning, implementation, monitoring and review.
- Workforce Involvement Objective
Companies and employee representatives will collaborate to encourage the active engagement of the workforce in all elements of the management system.
- Risk Reduction Objective
Each participating employers’ organisation will establish an action plan for its members (click here to view the BPF's SIMPL Charter and Action Plan). Such plans shall consider the key health and safety issues and challenges relevant in their sector. The plans should define risk assessment criteria (means for prioritising issues for action in the industry) delivery arrangements, success criteria and monitoring arrangements.
- Accident Reduction Objective
Each participating employer organisation will firstly establish a consistent accident reporting format in year one and establish baseline statistics. They should, from that, define a year-on-year reduction target (percentage) which is challenging, proportional and relevant to that position.
The BPF and SIMPL
" The BPF has a long tradition of leadership on health and safety having produced the basic codes of practice for machinery safeguarding with the HSE. Safety is a key part of what it means to be a sustainable company and our strong contribution to SIMPL fits well with what the BPF is all about - improving business in the UK plastics industry."
