BPF Recycling Group Position Statement for “Plastics 20/20 Challenge”
The
Plastics 20/20 Challenge is an initiative by the Plastics Industry to send a clear message that it recognises its responsibilities in a modern society to reduce climate change impact, address the energy deficit and achieve step change in the efficient use of resources.
Led by three key industry groups, Plastics Europe, PAFA and the BPF, the 20/20 Challenge has set a target to recycle 50 % of plastic packaging waste by 2020, supported by UK Parliament, using the framework of the Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Recover hierarchy.
The BPF Recycling Group is excited by the opportunity that the “challenge” provides for it to stake its claim as a world leader in plastic recycling, to develop profitable, sustainable businesses and to achieve this aspiration in an emerging low carbon economy.
The BPF Recycling Group believes that quality as well as quantity must be the key consideration in the delivery of plastic waste to the recycling sector if the 2020 target is to be achieved. It also believes that this can only be secured by the creation of a more standardised and robust waste infrastructure which is capable of measuring and managing its plastic waste such that the plastic recycling industry and its investors have confidence that the aspirations of the 20/20 challenge are both viable and achievable.
