Indian Plastics Industry

There are some 55,000 plastics processors in India and most of them are small to medium sized. The Indian Plastics Industry grew at 9% during 2007 however due to the global slowdown seen towards the end of 2008, the industry grew ‘just 6%’ in 2008. The current consumption of plastics is around 6kg (compared against the world average of 27 kg) however it is predicted that this will double over the next 3 years.
The key growth sectors are packaging, agriculture, electronics, healthcare,
telecommunications, automobile, construction, and pharmaceutical.

A large number of automobile manufacturers are setting base in India and they are sourcing high quality components which indicates the important role to be played by the Indian Plastics Industry in the Automotive Sector. Plastics play a very important role in packaging and especially in food packaging, where a food wastage is high approx. 30-40%) due to poor packaging and the heat. This creates great opportunities for packaging companies.

It is estimated that to meet processing demands an additional 60,000 plastics processing machines will be required by 2015 with an additional 15,000 tools. Foreign suppliers will therefore be essential to help maintain India's plastics industry growth.
It is clear that the industry is in a very healthy shape and is growing rapidly in sophistication, the opportunities for UK companies is vast.
