Vietnam- The new Asian 'Tiger'
Vietnam's plastics industry is expected to grow by up to 18% by 2010, with total production to hit 4.2 million tonnes, double the level in 2007. Some of the country's key sectors are crying out for plastics - particularly the packaging industry. The rising demand for high-tech plastic products is noted in various sectors, including automotive and electronics. The region is still in need of manufacturing machinery and raw materials. Investment opportunities exist in the plastics machinery production, plastics resin production and waste plastics reprocessing sub-sectors.

Currently, there are about 2700 plastic corporations in Vietnam, 80% of which are of small or medium size and privately owned. Only 6% are state-owned, but they represent about 20% of the total capital invested in the industry. The plastics sector is actively promoted by the Vietnamese government. The Ministry of Industry set up several key investment programmes for the industry up to 2010 to push up the production of hi-tech industrial plastics and export products and developing the plastic recycling industry.

The plastic industry in Vietnam is centered around Ho Chi Minh City and the surrounding provinces and cities such as Binh Duong, Dong Nai, Long An, and Ba Ria Vung Tau attract 80 percent of total investment in the plastic industry of Vietnam, accounting for 80 percent of total plastic products. Ho Chi Minh City is also the centerfor supply production, supply chain support, technical development, distribution and international transaction of the industry in Vietnam.
The Vietnamese plastics industry is highly dependent on imports. Currently the Vietnamese plastic industry must import about 1.5 - 2 million tons of raw materials annually, plus hundreds of auxiliary chemicals used in the plastics industry. Domestic raw materials can meet only 30 percent of the country’s demand. In 2004 Vietnam was Asia’s second largest importer of plastics materials. The Vietnamese government is attempting to promote import substitution by helping to finance several domestic production facilities but the government forecasts that Vietnam will still have to import roughly half of the resins it needs after these production facilities are completed in 2010.

| EXHIBITOR ALERT: misleading EXPO-GUIDE and FAIRGUIDE offers After a number of warning messages from Trade Fair organisers and the BPF Members, the BPF would like to state that EXPO-GUIDE and FAIRGUIDE is in no way connected with the BPF or any of the show organisers. EXPO-GUIDE and FAIRGUIDE is a Mexican based companies which regularly publicise services to exhibitors at events, primarily in Europe. The companies use a misleading form, which resembles an organiser's free catalogue listing service, inviting exhibitors to sign and return the form for an entry in an on-line directory, which contracts the purchaser into the three-year non-retractable agreement.
